Oakley Collegiate Professor Carol Boyd, Ph.D., RN, FAAN will discuss "Adolescents' Misuse of Controlled Medications: Misuse or Drug Abuse?" Dr. Boyd is part of the Division of Health Promotion & Risk Reduction (Div II) and Director, U-M Institute for Research for Women and Gender.

Featured guest segment on WUFT 89.1 public radio’s Public Health Minute is airing throughout the month of November.


"Motives for Medical Misuse of Prescription Opioids Among Adolescents” was published in the October 2013 issue of The Journal of Pain. The co-authored summary of a survey of nearly 3,000 adolescents indicated the most prevalent reasons for misuse were “to relieve pain” (84.2%) and “to get high” (35.1%).


An October 7 Psychiatry Weekly co-authored guest commentary, "Excessive and Nonmedical Use of Prescription Medications in Adolescents,” answered questions about the connection between adolescent misuse of prescriptions to other substance use.


A June National Institute on Drug Abuse video and transcript spotlighted "Prescription Drug Abuse in Youth."
