Location

North Campus Research Complex (NCRC)

Summary: Bioethical advice requires more than philosophical reasoning; indeed such advice is typically based on the weighing of scientific information about the consequences of different care paths. But as sociologists of science have shown, science is a social product. As such it is subject to the influence of the organizations that fund and publish research, one's professional commitments, and broader cultural ideas. Good ethics requires a more thoughtful approach to how information is produced. I will illustrate the danger of uncritical use of information by examining the ongoing controversy about birth place safety, using examples from the Netherlands and the United States.
Dr. De Vries is Professor, Department of Medical Education and
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Michigan; and Midwifery Science, Academie Verloskunde Maastricht/Zuyd University
