Sunni and Shi'i Islam: Understanding Sectarian Divides in the Muslim World

Speaker: Saeed Khan, Wayne State University Lecturer on Ethnic Identity and Muslim History, in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literature and Cultures.

Sectarian divisions between Sunni and Shi'i Muslims have intensified into conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Bahrain. The lecture will provide a historical overview of the ideological, political and theological differences between these two Islamic jurisdictions.
