Stem Cells: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
OLLI at U-M (50+)
Speaker: Eva L. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., FAAN, FANA; Professor of Neurology, U-M Medical School
Stem cells can be life-saving, or they can be dangerous. In the wrong hands, they can even be the basis of deadly scams. At the University of Michigan, they are being used to fight diseases, like ALS and cancer. But elsewhere, stem cell tourism is preying upon desperate patients. Dr. Feldman explains the many sides of stem cell science. In addition to her active clinical practice at U-M, she directs a team of 30 scientists who collaborate in finding new treatments for neurological diseases, including ALS, diabetic neuropathy, Alzheimer’s disease, and muscular dystrophies.
