The Political Economy of Moral Progress: Emancipation and Experiments in Free Labor

The abolition of slavery constitutes one of the great progressive transformations of moral consciousness and moral practice in history. This lecture will consider the contested roles of early experiments in free labor in this transformation, and draw some lessons on how further moral progress can be achieved.
