Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art
Teacher Workshop: Doris Duke and the Art of Islam
In this multi-part workshop in conjunction with the dramatic exhibition Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art, educators will have the opportunity to mix and match events according to their interests and schedules. Friday will focus on Qawwali music of Pakistan, including an artist talk and a UMS concert by Asif Ali Khan as the starting points to explore the practice and music of Sufism, one sect of Islam. Saturday will examine the visual arts of Islam, especially the rich variety of media, from tile mosaics and textiles, to calligraphy and manuscript illustration. A hands-on component will be included. On Sunday, participants will approach Islamic art from a historical and religious perspective, putting it in the context of the development and diversity of Islam. Each day will include a tour of the Doris Duke's Shangri La exhibition but each tour will look at different objects and aspects of the installation. All participants will receive a packet of contextual material and lesson plans. SCECHs will be available. Meetings will be held in the multipurpose room, the galleries and Rackham Auditorium.
