HOW PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS CAN WORK TO BENEFIT EVERYONE

Speaker: John J.H. “Joe” Schwarz, M.D. Ph.D.
Dr. Schwarz will speak about the relationship between the city of Battle Creek, the State of Michigan and the railroads, specifically, the Norfolk Southern and the Canadian National. He will include information about what has been done in Battle Creek by consolidating rail traffic on one line, about the purchase, by Amtrak, of the Norfolk Southern line between Kalamazoo and Porter, IN and the purchase of the Kalamazoo-Dearborn segment by the State of Michigan. He will describe the nature of these agreements and discuss the development of “Enhanced Speed” passenger rail in Michigan and its benefits.
Joe served sixteen years in the Michigan Senate, two years in Congress, was Mayor of Battle Creek and currently serves as a member of the Republican Leadership Council and the Republican Main Street Partnership. He is considered a moderate Republican. He is a physician and is currently teaching part-time at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at U-M.
