Mark Stone Trio
The Mark Stone Trio, sponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies, will play in the Apse during the UMMA After Hours event. While the trio’s format is the traditional Carnatic arrangement of a soloist with percussion and violin accompaniment, the music itself draws on Mark's wide-ranging compositional influences, from American jazz to African mbira/marimba music. In the group Mark plays the gyil (a xylophone from Ghana) and many types of mbiras including the new American made array mbira, the traditional Ugandan endongo, the ancient South African mbira nyunga nyunga, as well as the modern kalimba and karimba.
