Space Transportation: Past, Present and ...??

There is a long-standing tradition of unhappiness about the cost and reliability of space launch. There is also a long tradition of “rediscovering” approaches to these two issues that end up not solving either problem. This address discusses the history of space launch, the failed approaches to cost and reliability, the reasons for these failures as well as a guarded outlook for how these issues can be approached in the future.
