Labor: Material
Studiomake is based in Bangkok, Thailand and is led by David Schafer and Im Sarasalin Schafer. This practice maintains that there is no distinct boundary between the act of design and the act of construction; with a team of architects, designers, fabricators, and builders they work in the overlapping realms of architecture, interior, furniture, and objects. David and Im both received their Bachelor of Architecture degrees from the University of Arizonaand became licensed architects in 2007, after which they promptly went to art school. For two years they explored the depths of metals and ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art before moving to Bangkok to start their practice and to build a home, a studio, and a workshop near the Chao Praya River in 2009. In addition to being lecturers at Rangsit University, their recent projects include a series of ceramic pieces made by obstructing the process of traditional artisans, a prototype for mass-produced emergency shelters for Habitat for Humanity Thailand, a custom-extruded brick for the Guan Yin Pavilion, and an art and design gallery for art and design students.
