John Sayles is first and foremost a writer. The author of four novels and two collections of short stories, Sayles first entered the film industry by writing screenplays produced by others. This panel examines Sayles’ unique voice, both on the page and on the screen, and offers insights into what makes his screenplays so unlike what we normally see at the movies.

Panelists include Jim Burnstein, Screenwriter and U-M Lecturer in Screen Arts & Cultures;
Peter Ho Davies, Fiction Writer and U-M Professor of English Language and Literature;
A. Van Jordan, Poet and U-M Professor of English Language and Literature;
V. Prasad, Screenwriter and U-M Lecturer in Screen Arts & Cultures (Moderator).

The John Sayles Symposium is sponsored by the University of Michigan Department of Screen Arts & Cultures, University of Michigan Library, the Michigan Theater, and Cinetopia International Film Festival.
