Disability, Rehabilitation, and Technology: What is relevant in the Indian Context?
The presentation discusses work on leading up to the creation of the Accesshub.org, an online resource on disability services and policy, which resulted out of a collaboration between the National Institute of Speech and Hearing in India, and the University of Michigan School of Information. The talk discusses the way attitudes towards accessibility have evolved in the Indian policy context, disability is now recognized as a matter of relevance by both the central and state governments. Adaptation and use of technology can help in prevention, early detection, and early intervention that can enable greater social inclusion. This presentation introduces issues around accessibility in India and overviews the possibilities of the mobile platform for adults with disabilities.Dr. Samuel N. Mathew he is the Executive Director of National Institute of Speech & Hearing (NISH), and Director of Regional Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (RIPMR) in Kerala, India. Samuel did his M.S. in Special Education with emphasis on Augmentative and Alternative Communication and his Ph.D. in Special Education with cognate as Educational Technology from Purdue University.
