Author's Forum Presents: Legacy of a False Promise

A Conversation with Margaret Fuchs Singer, Howard Brick, & Nancy Blieden

At age thirteen, a young girl learns that her parents had been Communists during the 1930s and '40s while working for the U.S. government. Her father is called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and must decide how he will testify. His decision breaks his spirit and changes his family's life forever. Legacy of a False Promise: A Daughter's Reckoning is the compelling true story of this teenage girl caught up in the throes of the McCarthy era.

Retired from a 35-year career in special education, Margaret Fuchs Singer is the daughter of former communists Herbert and Frances Rice Fuchs. Joining her are: Howard Brick, Louis Evans Professor of History at U-M and author of Transcending Capitalism: Visions of a New Society in Modern American Thought; and Nancy Blieden, PhD, Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and Adjunct Asst. Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at Wayne State University.
