Research demonstrates quite consistently that religion and spirituality are cornerstones of African American life. African American children, adolescents and adults are disproportionately likely to attend religious services, and are disproportionately likely to report that religion is somewhat to very important in their lives. This presentation will explore the definitions and varied manifestations of religion and spirituality among African Americans; the functions of religion and spirituality with regard to coping; and strategies for incorporating and addressing matters of faith in counseling with African American clients.
