U-M alumnus José Francisco Salgado is an Emmy-nominated astronomer, photographer, visual artist, and public speaker who uses art as a vehicle to communicate science in non-traditional venues such as art museums and orchestra halls. In this lecture he will talk about how he collaborates with orchestras, composers, and chamber musicians to present films that provoke curiosity and a sense of wonder about the Earth and the Universe. His "Science & Symphony" films have been presented in more than 100 concerts in 15 countries with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Orchestra Teatro Regio Torino. He also communicates science with electronic musician Tom Bailey (from British pop group Thompson Twins) under the moniker Bailey-Salgado Project. As an experimental photographer, Salgado has visited more than 30 scientific sites in places such as the South Pole, the Atacama desert, and the South African Karoo. He will present a sample of these visuals, will discuss the science behind them, and will talk about the creative process of turning them into Science & Symphony films.
