People shift around the planet looking for better lives, sometimes simply for survival. It is something they do for themselves but also for their children. Such disruption is painful; life in a new culture is confusing and threatening. But there is hope and a dignity in the struggle. A large number of films now deal with the theme. Some are insightful and powerful. We will look at and discuss four of these films: "Lamerika" (Italy 1994); "Since Otar Left" (France and Belgium, 2003); "Head-on" (Germany and Turkey 2994); "Ilo Ilo" (Singapore 2014). Ira Konigsberg is Professor Emeritus of film at the University of Michigan.
