The Decline of the Ottoman Empire, The Balfour Declaration and the Arab Revolt of 1916
Books, lectures, discussions
World War I enabled Zionists to press for a Jewish homeland in Palestine under British protection and Arabs under Emir Hussein to seek British support for their revolt against the Ottomans. We will discuss three recent books on the subject: (1)"The Balfour Declaration: Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict" by Jonathan Schneer, (2)"Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and The Making of the Middle East" by Scott Anderson, and (3)"The War That
Ended Peace" by Margaret MacMillan. Reading the books in advance is helpful, but not required. Handouts about principal characters and maps will be mailed to participants in advance.
Instructor: Al Gourdji.
This class for those over 50 meets Mondays, March 16 - April 27.
