French Canalettos? -- Cityscapes of the French Enlightenment
Unlike Canaletto’s views of Venice or London, paintings by artists such as Jean-Baptiste Raguenet (1715 – 1793) and Alexandre-Jean Noël (1752 – 1834) are not well-known today. Professor Jean Boutier discusses their cityscapes and the works of other artists.
Boutier is Directeur d’Etudes at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Marseille) and visiting scholar in the U-M Department of History.
