Kurt Elling has been named Male Singer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association half a dozen times, and he's a perennial winner of the Down Beat critics' poll. Every album he's made has been at least nominated for a Grammy. He's a former divinity student. He adds "ranting" to the traditional jazz vocal techniques of vocalese and scatting. Kurt Elling's rich baritone voice spans four octaves and displays an astonishing technical facility and emotional depth. He has an awesome command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics, often sounding more like a virtuoso jazz musician than a mere singer. And if you're not a regular jazz clubgoer, the Chicago Tribune says that “Kurt Elling is going to change many listeners’ minds on the meaning and purpose of Jazz singing.” Join us for one of the premier jazz events of the year in southeastern Michigan!
