“UBOMI: Love, Life, and Loss”
Premiering a new work by Atlanta-based composer Joel Thompson, The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, based on the artwork of Shirin Barghi. Thompson uses the words of seven African-American men with the text structure likened to Haydn's Seven Last Words from the Cross. Additional repertoire includes, Hassler’s Cantate Domino; Schubert’s Ständchen, and Grab und Mond, featuring Ashley Dixon, mezzo-soprano; Parker-Shaw’s A Rovin' and Haul Away; John Legend and Common’s Glory. Special Guests include the Rutgers Men's Glee Club, Dr. Patrick Gardner, director and the Michigan Men's Glee Club Alumni of 1982-1987.
Artist Shirin Barghi has welcomed the use of her artwork #lastwords in the promotion of this event as the artwork has been a great influence on composer Joel Thompson.
