The U.S. is experiencing what observers call mass incarceration, hyper-incarceration and “a plague of prisons” because it has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Many criminologists believe prison currently causes more crime than it reduces. With Republicans and Democrats crowing over the need for reform, significant change may seem like a foregone conclusion. Is it? How far would reforms really go? What important ideas and potential solutions are not being discussed?

Dr. Paul Leighton is Professor of Criminology at Eastern Michigan University. He is a co-author of "The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison", and is working on the eleventh edition of that book. He is also the co-author of "Punishment for Sale: Big Business,
Private Prisons and The Incarceration Binge." Leighton is also President of the Board of SafeHouse.

This is the third in a six-lecture series. The subject is "Violence: Its Roots and Reasons." The next lecture will be January 28 entitled "ISIS in the Middle East: 100 Years in the Making."
