The conductor, Valery Gergiev, is something of a national hero in Russia for having kept alive the Mariinsky Theatre after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This series-opening celebration features the fiery Russian pianist Denis Matsuev in Rachmaninoff's third piano concerto.
