Shodo-Japanese Calligraphy
Uniquely Japanese Art
Shodo is the art of drawing characters with brush and ink to express spiritual depth through the beauty of the brush strokes. Shodo combines both kanji (Chinese characters) and kana (Japanese phonetic characters) to create a uniquely Japanese art. By controlling the thickness and the tone of the characters, the calligrapher expresses his or her own spirit and thought. $5 in-class materials fee. Tools provided for classroom only. Because we will use black ink, please wear a smock or painting clothes. Konomi Shinohara Corbin taught the first Calligraphy class offered at UM some years ago. She taught Japanese language at both UM and EMU. This class is for adults over 50.
