Eliminating Health Disparities for Ethnic Minority Populations: Culture Is Key
There exists a large disparity in mental health care for individuals in need of treatment, especially for ethnic minority populations like Latinos (AlegrÃa et al., 2008). Government agencies, clinicians, and researchers have identified the need to increase access to formal mental health services for underserved populations. However, structural and attitudinal barriers prevent many people from accessing services even when they perceive a need for treatment. The current research talk describes the development of an empirically-informed model of help seeking (the Integrated Model of Seeking Help; IMoSH), to describe how various factors may influence decisions to seek professional mental health services. It is hoped that the development of a comprehensive model of help seeking will move research beyond the identification of demographic predictors of service utilization and toward an understanding of contextual factors at the individual and societal levels.
Research studies examining the role of culture in help seeking will be presented. Lastly, future work will be proposed to move the mental health care field forward in its efforts to reduce health disparities for ethnic minority populations.
