UMS brings the Big Easy to Downtown Home & Garden with a season-opening event featuring Butler, Bernstein & The Hot 9.
Retro-futurist brass man Steven Bernstein has a soft spot for early jazz, so his hookup with New Orleans pianist and singer Henry Butler is bound to deliver big fun. A virtuoso who has been blind since birth and channels sounds as diverse as his Louisiana birthplace, Butler’s technical ability and expansive repertoire are legendary. The two first worked together in the Kansas City All Stars, a touring big band led by Bernstein that came out of the Robert Altman film Kansas City. They use New Orleans tradition and early 20th-century blues as a launching point toward exploration that is “both historically aware and fully prepared to cut loose.” (New York Times)
