The New York Philharmonic returns for its second major UMS residency, this time with a focus on Leonard Bernstein, the celebrated New York Philharmonic music director and composer who was born 100 years ago.

The first concert of the New York Philharmonic residency weekend features the music of Gustav Mahler, also a music director of the New York Philharmonic (1909-11), whose music Bernstein championed and brought back into the symphonic canon.

The second concert features a “Young People’s Concert.” The New York Philharmonic has presented Young People’s Concerts since 1926, but they received a new level of attention when Leonard Bernstein became music director in 1958. During the next 14 years, Bernstein presented 53 of these concerts, which were broadcast nationally and internationally. Millions of children learned about classical music from these programs. This hour-long celebration of Leonard Bernstein will be appreciated and enjoyed by audiences of all ages. Specific program to be announced.

The final weekend concert celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s centenary includes Bernstein’s own “Kaddish” Symphony, a work that has never been performed on a UMS concert, as well as Richard Strauss’s Don Quixote, featuring the New York Philharmonic’s principal cellist Carter Brey and principal violist and U-M graduate Cynthia Phelps. The UMS Choral Union joins in the festivities.
