Gender, Race and Northern Reconstruction
Most studies of emancipation's consequences have focused on the South and the former Confederacy. This talk moves our focus northward, and explores northern collisions over citizenship, segregation, civil rights, and the more informal politics of race among whites and African Americans, men and women, in the North. In particular, this talk explores how gender shaped the politics of race during the era of emancipation and how gender relations were contested and negotiated within northern black communities.
