Srijan will discuss findings from the Intern Health Study, a longitudinal cohort study that assesses stress and mood in training physicians (interns), enrolling 3,000 participants from 60+ institutions in the U.S. and China each year. Depression and suicide risk increase dramatically with the start of physician training. Srijan will describe work from the study elucidating how genetic, psychological and workplace factors affect whether stress leads to depression and suicide risk. Further, he will discuss how stress gets “under the skin” to affect function of the HPA, vascular and telomere systems.
