Liberia, the Next Decade

Building Capacity in a Post-Conflict Country

Background on the infrastructure of the health care delivery system in Liberia with the resulting impact on the health of its citizens will be presented in the context of a country emerging from the ravages of civil war. Dr. Boyd and Dr. Lori will discuss successful in-country collaborations and challenges faced working in a post-conflict country. Jody R. Lori, PhD, CNM, FACNM is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan, School of Nursing where she directs the Office of Global Outreach and serves as Deputy Director of the WHO Collaborating Center. She received her PhD in Nursing from the University of Arizona in 2009. Her program of research focuses on community-based interventions to address the high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa as well as strategies to increase training and deployment of human resources for health. Her work is based on a human rights approach to reduce disparate outcomes in maternal child health. Carol J. Boyd directs the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan. She is also the Deborah J. Oakley Collegiate Professor of Nursing, Professor of Women's Studies, and Research Professor at the Substance Abuse Research Center. She received her doctorate in Nursing with an Anthropology cognate in 1987 from Wayne State University; her MSN in Psychiatric Nursing was also earned at Wayne State in 1982. Prof. Boyd's earlier research focused on women's abuse of heroin and crack cocaine, but her more recent studies focus on adolescent and young adult populations--especially their use of prescription drugs. She strongly supports global health initiatives and has worked in Poland, Canada, China, Ghana, and Liberia. This talk is part of the series Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Global Perspective. It is cohosted by the School of Public Health.
