Blood, Ghosts and Glory
Michigan’s Role in the Civil War
Michigan’s Civil War story began with President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers and ended with the Iron Brigade accompanying the President’s body home to Springfield. Michigan units fought valiantly in over 800 battles, in one of which the instructor’s ancestor received the Kearney Cross for bravery. Her visit to Gettysburg brought her face to face with a ghost from another ancestor who fought in the Civil War.
