Object Lessons Continued: The Second (and Third) Century of University of Michigan Museums and Collections

The University of Michigan bicentennial provides an opportunity to look back at the University’s past and forward to our future. In this Farrand lecture, the last to be held in the nearly century-old Ruthven Museums Building, Professor Carla Sinopoli traces the history of the University of Michigan museums over that century and looks at their continued importance in the 21st century. She focuses particularly on the five museums that have occupied the Ruthven Building: Zoology, Paleontology, Anthropology, University Herbarium, and the Museum of Natural History. The talk draws on Sinopoli’s recently published co-edited book, "Object Lessons and the Formation of Knowledge: The University of Michigan Museums, Libraries and Collections 1817-2017".
