Sunday, February 27th through Saturday, March 5, 2011
DEADLINE: Friday. December 17, 2010.
Apply online at http://tinyurl.com/26d9pqq
DESCRIPTION: This is an opportunity to spend your spring break volunteering in a rural mountain community, while participating in cultural experiences to enhance your understanding of the area's rich history. U.S. and international University of Michigan students will work with families to repair homes including dry-walling, painting, basic construction, and other repairs as needed. In addition to this volunteer work, students will learn more about this area and its history by visiting local museums, listening to area singers and story tellers, and learning about local crafts. The group of students will be a diverse one, including students from different countries and from a variety of different cultural or religious backgrounds. Participants will be encouraged to discuss service work (such as the community service work that is part of this Alternative Spring Break), as it relates to their own background and personal beliefs.
