Vicki L. Ellingrod, Through the Precision Health Looking Glass: How Medication Response May Rely on What’s in Your Genes
Choosing the right medication for someone is often based on prescriber preference and not what might be most effective for the patient. This practice often leads to a trial and error sort of practice for finding a medication that works. The field of pharmacogenomics occurs at the intersection of genetics, pharmacology, and clinical pharmacy. Using data from a patient’s genetic analysis, clinicians are able to better predict which medication to use for certain gene/drug pairs, which may lead to fewer medication-related side effects, and overall better treatment outcomes. To do this currently, all patients would need to undergo this testing, which can be very expensive. Therefore, working to better identify those patients who would benefit from this testing the most needs to be done.
