Kathleen A. Stringer, The Signals of Bugs and Drugs in the Blood
Sepsis, when bacteria (bugs) get into the bloodstream, is a severe illness that requires hospitalization and intensive care. Presently, understanding of sepsis is limited, which has made its treatment very challenging. In fact, presently, there are no effective drug treatments for sepsis. We are using the measurement of small molecules (signals) in the blood to better understand sepsis and determine how changes in the levels of these signals reflect response to drugs. This field called metabolomics, is also helping us identify new drug target opportunities so we can find new and effective treatments for sepsis.
