As museum professionals respond to the growing demand for collaboration with Native American communities, the Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways project departs from typical collaborative efforts. While museum collaborations have overwhelmingly centered on museum exhibitions, Heritage Seeds focuses on research collections. Here, the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology (UMMAA) plant collections are the focal point of developing conversations. This presentation will explore my experience with the Heritage Seeds Project through my practicum at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. In particular, I will focus on the ways this project has begun to incorporate a broad range of individuals from a variety of university settings, museum backgrounds, and Tribal communities.
