Join fellow UM students and two UM faculty in London during the spring term for this annually customized program housed at a study center in London. Courses focus on different academic disciplines each year, thrown into relief by the dynamic, evolving communities of London. Integrate into the local scene through engaging course content and planned excursions in and around London. You will take 2 classes and earn 3 credits for each.
The courses include: Reading Multicultural London, Inside & Out (3 credits) where students will examine London as a global city defined by the interweaving of cultures—not as the capital of a single kind of Britishness but as the crossroads of multiple communities. In Community Action in Contemporary London (3 credits), the focus of the seminar will be on the use of the arts and culture in strategies for empowerment. Each student will complete an individual project that focuses on local issues and strategies for change. The course credit for this class can be counted towards the Race and Ethnicity (R&E) Requirement.
As an extension of class sessions, a variety of excursions are planned for your amazing learning experience in London. Past excursions have included visits to theatre performances, the Imperial War Museum, the Houses of Parliament, Brick Lane, Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, the Black Pride Festival, the British Museum, Whitechapel, and cathedral towns such as Canterbury and Salisbury.
