Flint: Recapturing Vehicle City
Tour and Lunch
The city of Flint, Michigan has had more than its fair share of challenges and negative publicity — especially in recent years. But that was not always the case. Flint used to be known as Vehicle City, a vibrant urban center where vehicles - initially, carriages and later, automobiles - were invented and produced. Discover this rich heritage on this unique and varied excursion.
We’ll begin with a bus tour of the city followed by a guided tour of the former Durant-Dort Carriage Company Factory One, which is considered to be the birthplace of General Motors and the epicenter of the global auto industry. From there, we will head east to the Flint Institute of Arts, where you will enjoy a private luncheon and ample time to explore on your own.
Last but not least, we’ll visit the Applewood Estate, the former home of the Mott family, who not only played a significant role in the development of the auto industry, they left an indelible mark on both Flint and Ann Arbor through their philanthropy. Guided tours will involve light walking with stair climbing (some of which will be steep). Please notify us of physical limitations in advance so that we can work with each location to accommodate any special needs or requests. Boarding begins at 8:00 a.m. to ensure prompt departure at 8:30 a.m.
This OLLI Out of Town event is for those over 50.
