Journey to Freedom
Underground Railroad Bus Tour
This bus tour will explore sites associated with two separate escapes of formerly enslaved people to freedom in Canada assisted by Underground Railroad networks in Michigan. The first stop in Marshall will include a docent-guided drive-by of sites associated with the attempted kidnapping of the Crosswhite family by their Kentucky owners in 1847.
We will lunch at Win Schuler’s restaurant before heading to Adrian along US12, the suspected route that a group of 28 enslaved people from Kentucky, led by a conductor, traveled on their journey to freedom in 1853. The Adrian community was the home of abolitionists Laura Haviland and Fitch Reed who separately wrote about this escape in a personal letter and memoir. Boarding begins at 8:30 a.m. to ensure prompt departure at 9:00 a.m.
This OLLI Out of Town event is for those over 50.
