Saturday Sampler Tour | Pompeii and the Bay of Naples

A fragment of a fresco (a type of wall painting) found in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Delicately painted, this painting shows a design called egg and dart. Oval egg shapes are interspered with vertical lines and painted to give the painting a sense of depth even though it is flat. Brightly colored bands decorate the fragment, which is about the size of an adult's hand, above and below the egg and dart pattern. In 79 CE, Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii and its neighbors around the Bay of Naples in layers of ash and pumice. On this guided tour, see luxurious artifacts like jewelry and frescoes alongside an ancient bronze key and agricultural tools. Learn about the latest discoveries from excavations in Region 5 of Pompeii and see similar artifacts in the Kelsey Museum’s collection.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.
