Must pre-register by Wednesday, March 9 at http://hiphoparoundtheworld.eventbrite.com/. Light refreshments will be provided.

Event description: Hip Hop is a form of musical expression and artistic culture that originated in African-American communities during the 1970s in New York City. It has had a significant influence on pop culture – particularly music and fashion – throughout the world.

This workshop will provide an introduction to Hip Hop, as well as an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what Hip Hop actually is, which will go beyond the sometimes distorted portrayal of Hip Hop in the popular media. Topics covered will include Hip Hop's role as a dynamic and complex cultural force in the United States, how different cultures worldwide have transformed Hip Hop with their own traditions and beliefs, and the ways in which Hip Hop can cross and bridge social, racial and cultural barriers. We'll also talk about the impact of Hip Hop on everyday English.

Workshop Presentation: Hip Hop Around the World Be advised that the workshop presentation will not be provided at the workshop. So please remember to print and bring it with you to the workshop so you can follow the presentation. If you have questions about the handout, please save your questions for the workshop.

Cosponsored by the International Center and Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA)
