Sujal Parikh Memorial Symposium on Health and Social Justice
2011 Theme: The Social (Justice) Network
This symposium is in honor of Sujal Parikh, an inspiring global health and social justice advocate. As a University of Michigan medical student, he held leadership positions in AMSA, UAEM, PHR, Uganda Village Project, and the U-M Center for Global Health. Sujal passed away in October 2010 after a road accident in Uganda where he was conducting AIDS research as an NIH-Fogarty Clinical Research Scholar.
This year's distinguished speaker is Dr. Peter Mugyenyi, director of the Joint Clinical Research Center in Uganda. Dr Mugyenyi is one of the world’s foremost HIV/AIDS specialists, author of the hard-hitting book Genocide by Denial, and Sujal Parikh’s research mentor during his time in the NIH Fogarty program. Global health training and educational curricula as agents of social change, health equity, and innovations in global engagement will be among the topics discussed.
