The State of Higher Education for LGBT Students, Faculty and Staff
12p-1p, Tribute room (1322) School of Education
Sponsored by: School of Education, Provost Office and Spectrum Center
Hear details of a new campus climate report co-authored by Dr. Sue Rankin, associate professor of college student affairs in Penn State's College of Education. The report, "The 2010 State of Higher Education for LGBT People," is the most comprehensive national report to date chronicling the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals at colleges and universities in the United States.
With the acknowledgment that institutions differ in the level of attention and emphasis on issues of diversity and campus climate, it is safe to say that a campus climate offering equitable learning opportunities for all students, academic freedom for all faculty, and fairness in employment for all staff and administrators is one of the primary responsibilities of institutions of higher education.
The presentation will [1] provide information on the current challenges facing LGBTQQAI students and employees, [2] review the significant differences between 2003 and 2009 with regard to the campus climate for LGBTQQAI students and employees and how this may influence policies and programs, and [3] offer campus advocates recommendations for addressing the challenges facing LGBTQQAI student and employees.
