The International Space Station is a large, unique, world class research facility in Low Earth Orbit. In its 18 years of human occupancy, thousands of research activities have been conducted across the spectrum of the arts, sciences, and engineering fields. This spacecraft, now with some components that have been in space for 20 years and said to be one of the largest and most complex multinational engineering tasks ever attempted has much to share. In this seminar, Mr. Ed Van Cise describes the role the Operations teams play in the accomplishment of the missions of the Space Station. He will also use case studies to describe the importance of involvement of an “operations mindset” in the design and implementation phases of any major engineering project. Finally, he will briefly examine the importance of High Performing, High Reliability teams and organizations when designing and operating large, complex, unique, and costly projects and systems.
About the Speaker...
Ed Van Cise is a Class of 2000 Aerospace Engineering graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Mr. Van Cise has been working in ISS operations at the NASA Johnson Space Center since 1998 when he started as a co-operative education student. Mr. Van Cise has been certified to operate in a number of positions in International Space Station Mission Control, to include the areas of Structures & Mechanisms, In-Flight Maintenance, Motion Control, Command and Data Handling, and Communications. Mr. Van Cise has instructed flight controllers and astronauts in various maintenance lessons and worked a number of ISS assembly missions. Mr. Van Cise was selected as a Flight Director in 2009. Certified in January 2010, Mr. Van Cise became the 78th NASA Flight Director, taking the call sign “Carbon Flight.” Mr. Van Cise has over 7,300 hours of console experience in ISS operations, has accumulated over 90 minutes of zero gravity experience on NASA’s Vomit Comet aircraft, and has utilized his SCUBA certification to dive on the full size ISS mockups in NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. In the Summer of 2012, he was inducted into the US Space Camp Hall of Fame. A native of Bay City, Michigan, Mr. Van Cise is married and has two children.
