Fresh on the heels of her soul-stirring performance at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in January, The Ark is proud to present An Evening with Mavis Staples on Friday, September 23, 2011.

Mavis Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Winner whose blazing voice powered the soul and gospel records of The Staple Singers, which are classics of 20th century music in anybody’s book, and she remains a vital artist. Mavis recently released a new album, “You Are Not Alone,” produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilco’s studio The Loft. The new release mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Those who saw her perform at the Folk Festival called for more from Mavis, and we’ll take you there!

A buffet dinner will be provided by Zingerman’s Roadhouse for those at the Silver ticket level and up. The evening will also feature a Silent Auction for your bidding pleasure and an afterglow dessert reception. Evening attire is encouraged.
