Karla Bonoff was the best of that breed. This California singer-songwriter looked herself in the eye with each song she wrote, and her sad, knowing music was recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Wynonna Judd ("Tell Me Why"), and a host of others, and a younger generation of female songwriters was listening closely.
