Exhibiting Orientalism: Challenges to Engaging in Public Scholarship

Alsultany is the guest curator for an exhibit at the Arab American National Museum, “DisORIENTation: Arabs and Arab Americans in the U.S. Popular Imagination,” scheduled for 2011. She will discuss the process of conceptualizing the exhibit – from the original idea, to receiving feedback from focus groups, and then revising the original idea. She will address some of the challenges she has faced as scholar attempting to be involved in public scholarship, particularly the challenges in exhibiting a history of racism and translating scholarly concepts for a wide audience.

Please RSVP to Joanna Frye at jrfrye@umich.edu or email any questions. If you would like to learn more about our program, please visit www.artsofcitizenship.org
