Rackham North: Developing a Social Media Strategy for Your Scholarly Career

Are you planning on going into the job market soon? Did you know 92% of companies (including colleges and universities) use or plan to use social media to recruit. Many graduate students have a love/hate relationship with social media. They know they “have to do it” that it’s the “right thing to do,” but is it necessary in higher education? You may be wondering, if you are planning to go the faculty tenure route, is it really necessary? At this workshop, you will learn how to think more strategically about your social media strategy and presence as a scholar. More specifically, you’ll decide what type of “professional persona” you are trying to portray and then you’ll learn some tactics and techniques for building your social media network. This workshop will focus on the following social media tools: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,, Hoot-suite, and If This Then That.
Speaker: John Vasquez is a second year Ph.D. student in the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education Program in MSU’s College of Education. Prior to returning to school to pursue graduate studies, John worked for the University of Michigan for over 20 years in both academic and student affairs. During his time at U-M, John worked in Rackham Graduate School where he led several programs targeted at retaining and helping to decrease the time-to-degree of underrepresented students including AGEP, Bridges to the Doctorate, the Rackham Summer Institute, and Rackham Merit Fellows Program. Currently John is a Fellow at MSU’s graduate school where he provides professional and career advice to Ph.D. students, postdocs, and early career faculty.
