Local Screening of Documentary on Homophobia & Youth
"Just Because I Am"
The film takes the viewer through the inspirational journey of an LGBT youth group, led by an enthusiastic gay mentor, who together give a response to homophobia by creating a performance on love, respect and tolerance. While experiencing the transformative energy of art and the empowering effects of self-affirmation, these youngsters also face aggravating homophobic reactions unleashed by their collective coming out in a traditionally conservative (USA-Canada) border city.
After the screening there will be a talk-back with local filmmakers (Gabrielle and Juan Javier Pescador) as well as with Chris Rabideau, the youth group leader featured in the film. Chris Rabideau has also created a curriculum around the film sponsored by Windsor Pride Community and approved by the board of education in the Windsor region. The program uses drama as an educational tool in addressing LGBT issues in the middle and high school community.
