How an art museum welcomes its 21st-century public is the subject of new works by students in the Stamps School of Art and Design's Unfashionable wearable art course. Unfashionable artworks consider the interconnections between UMMA's recent renovations—the reinstallation of the Apse with its groupings of art and "living room spaces" and the opening of the UMMA Café with its espresso drinks and baby kale salad—and what these spaces say about the art institution's valuation of distance and proximity, secularity and holiness, experiences of art in the digital age, and the consumption of culture. From 11:30am to 12:45pm on Wednesday, October 9, performers in wearable sculptures will further activate the newly altered spaces of the UMMA Café and Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Apse.
