How to Get Picked Up: Getting Your Story into the News

You have a story. But you need help in getting it told. This is a workshop for advocates, activists, entrepreneurs, communications directors, PR people, business owners, artists, nonprofit professionals, musicians, and others who want media coverage for their projects, clients, and issues. In "How to Get Picked Up," you will learn strategies for winning the interest of journalists -- not just for a one-time story, but as an ongoing strategy. We will discuss:

What kind of press releases head straight for the recycle bin -- and how to avoid them
How to find the journalists and editors who can best tell your story
What to do when you get media coverage -- but not the kind you want
What journalists expect from you when they give you a call
What to be cautious about when you are interviewed
How to develop a comprehensive strategy for using media, from the daily news pages to Twitter to online videos, to tell your story.
This will be an interactive workshop. You will leave with at least one excellent pitch for your story, and with a great deal of substantive resources that you will help you move forward. Please bring writing materials with you to the workshop.
